1. Violent protests erupted on the streets of Minneapolis for the second consecutive night Wednesday. The crowds were protesting the death of unarmed black man George Floyd, who had been murdered by police on Monday. Protestors and police squared off near the city’s 3rd Precinct police station, and police again shot rubber bullets and tear gas. One person was shot to death during the protest, which police are treating as a homicide, and they have a suspect in custody. (AP)
2. The United States coronavirus cases top 1.7 million. In less than four months America’s death toll stands at more than 100,000. Former Vice President Joe Biden tweeted “There are moments in our history so grim, so heart-rending, that they’re forever fixed in each of our hearts as shared grief. Today is one of those moments. To those hurting, I’m so sorry for your loss. The nation grieves with you.” (CNN)
3. Two new coronavirus-related deaths and 28 new coronavirus cases were reported in Maine on Wednesday, bringing the statewide death toll to 81 and case number to 2,137 of which 699 are active. Over 13 Hundred Mainers have recovered from the virus. (PRESS HERALD)
4. Wednesday, Governor Janet Mills indefinitely postponed dine-in service for restaurants in York, Cumberland and Androscoggin Counties. Rising COVID-19 case counts in those counties and hospitalizations nearly doubling led to the decision. (WGME)
5. HBO launched their new streaming service HBO Max on Wednesday, which comes with a $15 a month price tag. The new service has all of the traditional HBO shows, as well as a bunch of other content. Film offerings include DC superhero movies, the Harry Potter films as well as classic movies from Criterion Collection. TV offerings include Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Rick and Morty, Doctor Who, The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, and South Park. and new episodes of Adventure Time. It also doesn’t yet offer 4K resolution. (CNET)
