1. The Democratic National Convention kicked off yesterday. Democrats from across the ideological spectrum and a few Republicans spoke in support of presumptive nominee Biden. 2016 GOP presidential candidate John Kasich, an anti-abortion conservative, said being a lifelong Republican “holds second place to my responsibility to my country. In normal times, something like this would probably never happen, but these are not normal times,” First Lady Michelle Obama closed the night, saying, “I know Joe, he is a fundamentally decent man, guided by faith. And he listens. He will tell the truth, and trust science.”
2. The U.S. Tops 4.5 Million coronavirus cases with over 170,000 related deaths. The Maine CDC reported no new deaths and 29 new cases on Monday. Maine’s death toll remains 127 with 430 active cases.
3. The Maine CDC says it is investigating a COVID-19 outbreak associated with a wedding reception at Big Moose Inn in Millinocket. 24 people associated with the August 7 event have tested positive. Eighteen of the positive cases were people who attended the wedding, and the six other people were in close contact with them.
4. Mainers are now able to request an absentee ballot to be sent to them through the mail through a new online service. The Online Absentee Ballot Request Service went live on the Maine Secretary of State’s website on Monday. A record number of Mainers are expected to vote by absentee ballots this November.
5. Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon took the stage Monday night at the DNC to share her support for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and to introduce a performance in Scarborough from grammy-nominated artist Maggie Rogers.
