1. Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman died this past Friday at the age of 43 after battling colon cancer since 2016. His breakout role came in 2013 when he portrayed baseball legend Jackie Robinson in the biopic 42. He then played James Brown in Get on Up before taking on the role of Black Panther.
2. 17-year-old suspected shooter Kyle Rittenhouse skipped his first extradition hearing Friday. He asked for, and was granted, an extension so he could hire his own legal team. The teen was charged Thursday with intentional and reckless homicide in a shooting at a Kenosha, Wisconsin, protest. Two died and a third person was injured. He faces six total charges, and could possibly spend the rest of his life in prison if he’s convicted on all of them.
3. The U.S. tops 5.9 million coronavirus cases with over 183,000 related deaths. The Maine CDC reported no new deaths and 23 new cases on Sunday. Maine’s death toll is 132 w/ 470 active cases.
4. Aquaboggan Water Park in Saco is shutting down for the season, effective immediately. This, after local law enforcement issued the park a cease and desist order over violations of the Governor’s executive orders. Saco Chief of Police Jack Clements writes within the cease and desist order, “Aquaboggon routinely has more than 100 customers at its facility. Indeed, on at least one occasion, the facility had over 1,200 customers.”
5. Schools in RSU 16, 52 and AOS 93 are opening in Maine today, becoming the first public schools in the state to welcome students inside since the pandemic began. Many public schools in Maine have postponed the start of classes until either Sept. 8 or Sept. 14 while they continue to work on reopening plans.
