1. The U.S. tops 6.5 million coronavirus cases with over 194,000 related deaths. The Maine CDC reported no new deaths and 40 new cases on Monday. Maine’s death toll is 136 w/ 530 active cases. Five deaths have now been linked to the Millinocket wedding reception in August at the Big Moose Inn.
2. When asked to recognize the role climate change is playing in the fires, former reality TV show host Donald Trump said, “It will start getting cooler, just you watch.” When an official said he wished the science agreed with Trump’s assessment, Trump countered, “I don’t think science knows, actually.” Stanford University climate scientist Chris Field said the planet isn’t going to suddenly get cooler. Winds carrying smoke all the way from the West Coast will gradually dim the sky over Maine. Over the next few days, you can expect sunrises and sunsets to be a deeper orange-to-reddish color than usual. And if the smoke gets really thick, the sun could disappear behind the smoke as it sets.
3. Astronomers using telescopes have spotted the chemical signature of phosphine high in the clouds of Venus. Phosphine is a gas that on Earth is only associated with life. They believe the phosphine could be coming from single-cell, microscopic microbes that live in the 10-mile-deep clouds.
4. The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be held virtually this year because of the pandemic. The TV parade will be filmed over a two-day period, and will have about 25 percent of the usual participants. It won’t follow the usual 2.5 mile route, but will instead stay on the streets surrounding Herald Square.
5. Peeps production had been shut down this past spring due to the pandemic and has since returned, but only in a limited capacity. The company will “forego production for Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day to focus on meeting demand for next Easter season.”
