1. The presidential race remains too close to call this morning as Trump and Biden battle for three familiar battleground states — Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Trump made premature claims of victories in several key states and said he would take the election to the Supreme Court to stop the counting. Biden urged patience, saying the election “ain’t over until every vote is counted.” Joe Biden has won at least three of Maine’s four electoral votes. (PRESS HERALD)
2. Sen. Susan Collins was leading Democratic challenger Sara Gideon early Wednesday in a record-setting U.S. Senate race with national implications.If neither Collins nor Gideon win with a majority during the initial vote tally, the race will require a ranked-choice re-tabulation, which would delay final results for at least a week. 3. Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree wins reelection in Maine’s 1st Congressional District. Democratic Congressman Jared Golden is leading Republican Dale Crafts with more than 53% of the vote in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District race. (WGME)
4. The city of Portland passed five of its referendums Tuesday, only rejecting a restriction on short-term rentals. The referendums that passed include one that would raise the minimum wage to $15 over the next three years and one that removes the cap on marijuana stores and dispensaries in the city. A ban on facial surveillance by public officials also passed. (WGME)
5. The U.S. tops 9.3 million Covid-19 cases with over 232,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported no new deaths and 127 new cases on Tuesday. Maine’s death toll is 148 with 1,146 active cases. An outbreak at the Maine Department of Corrections prison in Windham has grown to 72 inmates and nine staff members who tested positive for COVID-19. (WMTW)
