1. The DEA will move to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, recognizing its medical use and acknowledging that it has less potential for abuse than other drugs. This would be the agency’s most significant policy change in around 50 years. Marijuana would move from a Class I drug, alongside heroin and LSD, to a Class III drug, alongside anabolic steroids and ketamine. It would not legalize marijuana outright for recreational use. (AP)
2. Despite parent concerns, Eid will continue to be observed by Lewiston Public Schools, according to a letter from the Superintendent. Eid is recognized and observed by nearly half of Lewiston’s student population and many staff. Parents’ concerns about the Muslim holidays are because of the challenge “to plan for their children and their work schedule due to the nature of not knowing when Eid will occur.” The dates are based on sightings of the lunar phase. 3. Chili’s Grill & Bar near the Maine Mall in South Portland will close its doors for good on May 7, a manager on duty told the Bangor Daily News. According to the BDN, 35 employees will lose their jobs. The only other Chili’s in Maine is in Bangor. (WGME)
4. The Maine Mariners forced a Game 7 of their first-round Kelly Cup playoff series with a 2-1 win over the Adirondack Thunder yesterday. Game 7 is Wednesday night in Glens Falls, New York. Game time is 7:00 pm. The winner will face the Norfolk Admirals in the second round. (WMTW)
5. The Greely baseball team defeated Edward Little 3-2 on Monday at CMCC in Auburn, thanks to an incredible defensive play from Marky Axelsen that garnered some national attention. Axelsen made a diving catch in foul territory down the third base line, popped up to his feet, and then fired a strike to first base to double off a Red Eddies runner. The play made #3 on ESPN’s Top 10 Plays of the day. (PH)
