With its Gold medal win in the Belgian-style Witbier category of this year’s Great American Beer Festival, Allagash White has cemented its status as the most awarded wheat beer in the world! The Maine brewery’s day one offering – available since Founder Rob Tod first fired up the brewing system at Allagash in 1995 – now sports a total of 18 medals across the most highly regarded beer competitions worldwide.
“Allagash White has been our brewery’s passion since the day we opened. And as we approach our 30th anniversary, the continued recognition of our signature beer is especially significant,” said Rob Tod, Founder, Allagash Brewing Company. “We’re excited to spread this news because we’re so proud of our team. They work day in and day out to make sure that the Allagash White that comes to you, no matter where you happen to be, always tastes fresh and delicious.”
To verify this accolade, Allagash tabulated results from three of the most prestigious beer competitions in the world: Great American Beer Festival, World Beer Cup, and European Beer Star. In total, Allagash White has earned 10 Gold medals, 3 Silver medals, and 5 Bronze medals—18 medals in all. In addition to the medal count, the Allagash team also confirmed their claim by pulling results and reviewing thousands of medal winners over several decades in all categories and styles.
Inspired by Belgian brewing traditions, Rob Tod developed Allagash White three decades ago as a one-man operation in a rented corner of a warehouse. At the time, few other craft brewers in America were embracing the witbier style, but Rob wanted to brew something that would surprise and delight the average beer drinker, as he had been surprised and delighted by his first taste of witbier. Fast forward 30 years later and Allagash White remains the most in-demand offering of Allagash’s core portfolio, with Tripel, Curieux, and the seasonal House Series: Surf House, Haunted House, and Ski House.
With this latest Gold medal for White, Allagash extended its medal-winning streak to five straight years at the Great American Beer Festival, which took place October 10-12 in Denver. The brewery also earned a Silver medal for Allagash Tripel in the Belgian-style Abbey Ale category—Tripel itself sports a total of 13 medals: 5 Gold and 8 Silver. The 38th edition of the GABF featured 1,869 breweries and cideries in the competition from all 50 states, plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico
