1. President Trump tweeted that November’s election should be delayed because “universal mail-in voting” will lead to “the most inaccurate and fraudulent election in history.” Republican Congressional leaders were quick to dismiss Trump’s proposal. “Never in the history of the country have we ever not had a federally scheduled election on time. We’ll find a way to do that again this November 3rd,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said. Trump can’t change the election date; only Congress has that power. (CNN)
2. The U.S. tops 4.4 million coronavirus cases with over 152,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported one new coronavirus-related death and 22 new cases on Thursday. The state’s death toll is now 122 with 421 active cases. Gov. Janet Mills announced MaineHousing will double its rental assistance from $500 to $1,000 beginning Monday. (WMTW)
3. The Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands has issued further restrictions on swimmers at four state parks (Popham Beach, Reid, Ferry Beach, Crescent Beach) after Monday’s deadly shark attack off Bailey Island. (WMTW)
4. Dunkin’ announced Thursday that it’s closing about 800 restaurants permanently. Dunkin says the stores are in “low-volume sales locations” and only make up about two percent of its sales as of last year. Dunkin’ also announced that 350 locations outside the country could permanently close as well. (CNN)
5. The NBA season resumed on Thursday and delivered a double-header where both games were decided by a basket. All four teams kneeled for the National Anthem and a number of players wore Black Lives Matter shirts. The NBA also ran commercials where coaches and players talked about fighting for social justice.
