1. In February former reality TV show host Donald Trump claimed the coronavirus will miraculously go away by April. It’s October 2nd and Trump has tweeted that he and his wife Melania tested positive for coronavirus. “Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!” During Tuesday’s presidential debate Trump mocked Joe Biden for wearing a mask. (News Center)
2. The U.S. tops 7.2 million Coronavirus cases w/ over 207,000 related deaths. The Maine CDC reported one new death and 40 additional cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. The statewide death toll remains 142 w/ 585 active cases. (WMTW)
3. More Maine businesses have been cited by state health authorities. According to the Press Herald, the businesses that were recently disciplined included Limerick Village Variety in Limerick, Pat’s Pizza in Portland, and Rack City pool hall in Bangor. Since non-essential businesses were allowed to reopen, Maine’s health inspection program has issued 24 “imminent health hazard” citations. (WGME)
4. John Jenkins, former mayor of Lewiston and Auburn succumbed to his illness and passed away Wednesday night. He served two terms as Lewiston’s mayor, and won an election as Auburn’s mayor a decade later, becoming the first African-American to serve as leader of both cities. (WGME)
5. Ireland’s Supreme Court has ruled that the bread sold at Subway has too much sugar to actually be considered bread. The judgment came out of a tax lawsuit where a Subway franchisee complained about value-added tax being tacked on to sandwiches and drinks. The court said that Subway’s bread contained way too much sugar to be considered a non-taxable staple food. (SF GATE)
