1. The White House says the president will go along with a peaceful transition of power if he loses the election, after refusing to make that commitment Wednesday night. Senator Angus King called President Donald Trump’s recent comments involving the election, “chilling,” “dangerous,” and an “invitation to violence.”
2. The U.S. tops 6.9 million coronavirus cases with over 202,000 related deaths. The Maine CDC reported no new deaths and 44 new cases on Thursday. Maine’s death toll is 140 w/ 597 active cases.
3. Free covid testing is being offered to all students and staff at Sanford High School and Sanford Regional Technical Center. Drive-thru testing will be held in the Sanford High School parking lot Friday and Saturday from 8:00am to 4:30pm. Appointments are required and can be made online.
4. Interscholastic soccer and field hockey games return to Maine on today, marking the first time most athletes have played in a high school contest since February. Seasons will be shorter, and there won’t be any sanctioned postseason playoffs. Athletes will not be required to wear masks during competition, but coaches, game officials, support personnel and players on the sidelines will be wearing them. And few, if any, spectators will be allowed. Portland opens its season on Friday afternoon, playing rival Deering at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
5. Three New York City transit workers constructed a secret man cave underneath a train platform at Grand Central Station. The employees have now been suspended without pay after their leisurely lair was discovered by their superiors. The storage room was outfitted with a futon, TV, exercise equipment, a stocked fridge, and beds.
