1. The U.S. tops 16.2 million Covid-19 cases with over 299,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported no new covid related deaths and 303 new cases on Sunday. Maine’s death toll is 257 with 5,175 active cases.
2. A new executive order from Governor Janet Mills could lead to criminal charges for people who refuse to wear masks. Businesses must turn away all customers without a mask, which now includes people with medical exemptions. Anyone who refuses to wear a mask can be charged with criminal trespassing. Mills says police officers will be ready to enforce this mandate.
3. Maine CDC Director Dr. Shah says Maine is expecting the first doses of a vaccine to arrive on today or Tuesday. In addition to the first expected shipment of about 12,000 doses, Maine has already asked for a second batch to vaccinate 37,000 more people. According to the Maine CDC’s vaccination plan, frontline healthcare workers and first responders will get the vaccine first followed by people who are considered high risk.
4. Cleveland’s Major League Baseball team will drop Indians from their name. It is believed the Indians moniker was inspired by Louis Sockalexis, a baseball player from Old Town, Maine and a member of the Penobscot Tribe. He played for, what was then referred to as, the Cleveland Spiders. The team was renamed the Indians in 1915.
5. After being closed for five years, Saddleback Mountain in Rangeley is back. For people returning to Saddleback, they’ll notice renovations in the lodge, but the biggest change is the new chairlift, which has four times the capacity and about three times the speed of its predecessor. The official opening day for the public is Dec. 15.
