1. The U.S. tops 13.5 million Covid-19 cases with over 268,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported 20 new deaths and 219 new cases on Tuesday. Maine’s death toll is 214 with 2,398 active cases.
2. Governor Mills announced a grant program for Maine’s tourism, hospitality and retail small businesses backed by $40 million in federal CARES Act funds. Grants may be used to cover expenses, including but not limited to: PPE, payroll costs, rent, mortgage, utilities payments and necessary operating expenses.
3. Strong winds brought down trees and power lines in many Maine communities overnight. A transformer on Brackett Street in Portland blew during the storm causing a fire at the Ronald McDonald House. As of 5:30 a.m., CMP was reporting over 85,000 customers without power.
4. President-Elect Joe Biden was rough-housing with the family pooch over Thanksgiving holiday and ended up with a hairline fracture in his foot. Biden’s doctor says he’ll likely require a walking boot for several weeks.
5. Merriam-Webster has declared Pandemic as the word of the year for 2020. By March 11th of this year, searches for the word pandemic were up more than 115,000% over the same day in 2019. March 11th is when the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus situation a pandemic.
