1. The U.S. tops 11.2 million Covid-19 cases with over 247,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported no new deaths and 173 new cases on Monday. Maine’s death toll is 165 with 2,122 active cases. Yesterday was the first day without a reported death in nearly a week. (WMTW)
2. According to preliminary data, the Moderna vaccine appears to be 94.5% effective. Pfizer announced last week that it’s vaccine is 90% effective. A key difference between the two is that only Pfizer’s needs to be kept in ultra-cold storage. Maine CDC director Dr. Shah said that’s significant in Maine, a place where distribution could be a challenge in many remote corners. (WMTW)
3. Katrina Preble of Bangor was arrested Monday and charged with threatening to kill and decapitate U.S. Sen. Susan Collins in voicemails left in the days following this month’s election. (WGME)
4. Homelessness in Portland is approaching record levels. City officials say as of last Monday they served 539 people. The most the city has ever served was 604 in the summer of 2019 when there was an influx of asylum seekers. Despite that, the city says they still have options available for people and are continuing to look at plans for a shelter on Riverside Street. (WGME)
