1. The U.S. tops 16.7 million Covid-19 cases with over 303,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported 6 new covid related deaths and 411 new cases on Tuesday. Maine’s death toll is 265 with 5,881 active cases. 181 Mainers are currently hospitalized w/ covid-19.
2. MaineHealth says it administered the state’s first COVID-19 vaccinations to its front-line caregivers on Tuesday. At 9 a.m. Kayla Mitchell, became the first care team member to receive the vaccine. Mitchell is a nurse who treats COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit at Maine Medical Center.
3. Maine U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King said Tuesday they hope a $748 billion compromise COVID relief package will pass before the Congressional holiday recess. The package would extend current unemployment benefits, and add a $300 weekly supplement. It would also provide $300 billion for relief to small businesses. The bill includes $16 billion for vaccine delivery costs and COVID testing.
4. Westbrook PD says 26-year-old Alice Sweet of Portland was arrested for allegedly chasing McDonald’s employees with a chainsaw. Sweet allegedly entered McDonald’s with a chainsaw, went behind the counter and stole a drink and some food while revving the chainsaw. When the manager confronted Sweet in the parking lot, Sweet chased the manager with the chainsaw and damaged two vehicles.
5. Yesterday marked the deadline for most packages to be shipped in order to arrive on Christmas. If you want to pay some extra fees, you have until Dec. 18 to ship first class mail or Dec. 23 for priority mail express. However the USPS has issued a warning on its website saying it is experiencing unprecedented shipping volume and limited employee availability due to the impacts of COVID-19.
