1. Democrat Raphael Warnock won one of Georgia’s two Senate runoffs Wednesday, becoming the first Black senator in his state’s history and putting the Senate majority within the party’s reach. The focus now shifts to the second race between Perdue and Democrat Jon Ossoff. The candidates are locked in a tight race and it is too early to call a winner. (AP)
2. A Wisconsin prosecutor announced Tuesday that he will not file criminal charges against Officer Rusten Sheskey, a white police officer, who shot Jacob Blake, a Black man, in the back in Kenosha last summer, leaving him paralyzed. Bystander video of the shooting on Aug. 23 turned the nation’s spotlight on Kenosha during a summer marked by protests over police brutality and racism. (WMTW)
3. The U.S. tops 21 million Covid-19 cases with over 357,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported 9 new covid related deaths and 597 new cases on Tuesday. Maine’s death toll is 369. 191 Mainers are currently hospitalized w/ covid-19. Over 35,000 Mainers have been vaccinated. (WMTW)
4. H&R Block or TurboTax customers may experience a delay in receiving their second stimulus check. TurboTax tweeted a thread explaining due to the speed at which the second payment was issued, the money may have been sent to an account associated with customers’ 2019 filings that is no longer active. If you don’t receive your stimulus money, you’ll be eligible to get that money on your tax return. (NEWS CENTER)
5. Maine turned 200 in 2020, and events celebrating the anniversary of statehood were put off because of the pandemic. The Maine Bicentennial Commission announced events including A Maine Statehood Day ceremony and Time Capsule Sneak Peak will be rescheduled for later this year as part of the “200-Plus-One” campaign.
