1. Protestors torched a Minneapolis police station Thursday on the third night of protests over the police killing of George Floyd. Cops abandoned the station shortly after 10 p.m. local time. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz responded by calling in the National Guard to Minneapolis on Thursday. President Trump hinted at more police violence when he tweeted, “When the looting starts, the shooting starts.”
2. The United States coronavirus cases top 1.7 million. In less than four months America’s death toll stands at more than 101,000. The US has the highest number of deaths and cases globally.
3. Three new coronavirus-related deaths and 52 new coronavirus cases were reported in Maine on Thursday, bringing the statewide death toll to 84 and case number to 2,189 of which 703 are active. Over 14 Hundred Mainers have recovered from the virus.
4. The Boston Athletic Association announced Thursday that the Boston Marathon will be held as a virtual event. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh had cancelled the traditional marathon due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Virtual participants have to complete the 26.2 mile distance within six hours and provide proof of timing. All finishers of the virtual race will receive an official Boston Marathon program, participant t-shirt, medal and runner’s bib.
5. A 103-year-old Boston Red Sox megafan celebrated beating the coronavirus this week by knocking back an ice-cold Bud Light. Her nickname is “The Sheriff.” Stejna was believed to be at death’s door earlier this month; when a relative asked if she was ready to go to heaven, she replied, “Hell, yes.” Her grandson added, “She kind of didn’t accept what was going on. She kept complaining that she couldn’t listen to Red Sox games [on her transistor radio].” Stejna wound up making a full recovery–and kicking back in her nursing-home bed with a metal bottle of Bud Light.
