1. Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving British monarch, has died at the age of 96. Her son Charles is now king.
2. Portland police charged a 38-year-old Boston man with murder in Wednesday’s fatal shooting at Deering Oaks park. It’s not clear what motivated the shooting. Portland police are expected to hold a news conference today to address a number of recent violent crimes.
3. A federal judge ruled against the Maine Lobstermen’s Association in their bid to roll back new fishing requirements designed to protect right whales. Governor Janet Mills blasted the decision. Lobstering advocates claim the new rules aren’t based on what they called the “best available scientific information.”
4. Allagash Brewing Co. plans to build a tasting room in Scarborough that will replace the one at its Portland brewery. Allagash announced Thursday that it plans to open the new tasting room, which will have both indoor and outdoor spaces, in 2024.
5. The Patriots open the season on Sunday in Miami. Kickoff is at 1pm.
