1. Hillary Clinton declared victory in the Democratic presidential primary last night and became the first woman to (presumptively) capture the nomination of a major political party in U.S. history. Trump swept the Republican primaries and was quick to call out the Clintons. “We can’t fix a rigged system by relying on the very people who rigged it,” he said. (Vox)
2. Residents who live near the site where a developer is proposing to extend a massive housing development off Spring Street told the Westbrook Planning Board Tuesday night that they are concerned about traffic, the impact on schools and city services, and the appearance of the project. Although they said they were pleased with the plan to add commercial space for a market or coffee shop in the second phase, they said they’d like to see a variety of colors on the houses and more character in the design. 3. The Humane Society of the United States released findings of an investigation of a Maine egg farm. The organization conducted an undercover investigation at the Turner egg farm, which is operated by Pennsylvania-based Hillandale Farms. The Humane Society said hens were confined in cages packed so tightly, the birds couldn’t spread their wings. Hens were forced to share their cages with the decaying carcasses of their dead cage mates. Some dead birds were mummified and stuck to the wire cage floor, according to the group. (WMTW)
4. The Cincinnati Zoo reopened its gorilla exhibit on Tuesday following a controversial incident that saw authorities shoot and kill an endangered gorilla in order to rescue a a 3-year-old boy who climbed into the enclosure. The AP reports that the exhibit, which has 10 gorillas remaining, now features a barrier that is 42 inches high–about a half-foot taller than before. It also includes surveillance cameras. (AP)
