1. The U.S. and Canada each pulled Boeing 737 Max 8 airplanes out of circulation on Wednesday after a crash in Ethiopia killed 157 people earlier this week. In that accident and an earlier one in Indonesia, the plane’s computer sent it into an automatic nosedive shortly after takeoff when it was mistakenly believed to be flying too high. (AP)

Kids around the world plan to skip school on Friday to demand legislative action on climate change.Student activists consider climate change to be “the biggest threat in human history,” and are calling for countries to commit to reducing greenhouse emissions. Groups of students in all 50 states plan to participate in the #FridaysForFuture skip day. (CNN)
3. Portland and Deering High Schools will not be merging. The Portland school commission tasked with finding a way to save money in the school budget voted unanimously Wednesday night to not recommend “Option 2” to the school board. Option two would have combined Portland and Deering into one high school, and converted the other into a junior high. (WGME)
4. A partial Facebook outage affecting users around the world has stretched beyond 14 hours, but was showing some signs of ending early Thursday. It’s believed to be the biggest interruption ever suffered by the social network. Some users of Facebook and other platforms owned by the tech giant — including Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp — reported intermittent problems accessing the services and posting content. (NFL)
