1. A man who was suffering a mental health crisis created a standoff with police in South Portland that lasted for more than six hours Monday night before he set himself on fire. The man was taken into protective custody and transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was being treated for non-life threatening burns. (PH)

Court documents released on Monday say Old Orchard Beach Fire Chief Ricky Plummer admitted to setting the brush fire that scorched 42 acres in the town last month, but blamed it on a lit cigarette. Plummer told investigators he went to the marsh to get some “peace” and smoke a cigarette, saying he tossed the cigarette in the same area of the fire’s origin. However, investigators say they never found evidence of the cigarette. (WMTW)
