1. The Dominican Republic’s lead prosecutor said Wednesday that former Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was not the target of a shooting in a nightclub in his hometown. Attorney General Jean Alain Rodríguez told reporters the target was another man, dressed similarly to Ortiz, who was seated with the retired baseball star on the night of the June 9 shooting in the capital of Santo Domingo. Ortiz remains hospitalized from the gunshot wound to his back. Doctors in Boston have upgraded his condition from guarded to good. (Press Herald)
2. A bill being considered Wednesday night would allow online sports betting in Maine. Bill sponsors say if signed by the governor, sports betting would be legal both online, as well as at establishments that already do some form of gambling, like a casino or racing track. The bill passed both the house and senate with an overwhelming majority. Sponsors say one of the appealing parts of sports gambling is the taxable income that will help the state and won’t hurt Maine businesses. (WGME)
3. Maine law is getting tougher when it comes to driving with kids in the car. Under the new law, all children under two years old must face the rear in their car seat. Currently, there is no mandate on rear-facing car seats in Maine. Children who do face forward must be harnessed until they’re 55 pounds instead of 40 pounds. The law also clarifies that children must be in a booster seat until eight years of age, 57 inches tall or 80 pounds. (WGME)
4. Cap’n Crunch will put out two new cereal flavors this summer. A cotton candy-flavored Cap’n Crunch will hit stores later this month. It’s the brand’s first new flavor in four years. Meanwhile, Cap’n Crunch is also offering a seasonal, limited-edition Red, White & Blue Crunch. The multi-colored, patriotic cereal will boast a “refreshing berry flavor.” (US Magazine)
