1. Thousands showed up Monday to mourn George Floyd in his hometown of Houston, Texas. Floyd died in police custody two weeks earlier, setting off protests around the country and world seeking racial justice. Family members of other black victims attended, including those of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Ahmaud Arbery and Trayvon Martin. Floyd will be buried today at Memorial Gardens cemetery, and will be laid to rest next to his mother. (AP)
2. A judge raised Derek Chauvin’s bail from $500,000 to $1 million for the murder of George Floyd. The Minneapolis police officer was initially charged with third-degree murder before the charge was escalated to second-degree murder. His attorney didn’t oppose the increased bail amount. Chauvin is due in court next on June 29. (AP)
3. The U.S. Coronavirus cases top 1.9 million. America’s death toll stands at more than 111,000. The number of new cases announced in Maine on Monday – 18 – is the lowest single-day total since May 12. The stated wide death toll stands at 99 with 2,588 cases of which 598 are active. (PRESS HERALD)
4. Gov. Janet Mills on Monday announced an alternative to her 14-day quarantine mandate for out-of-state visitors. Beginning July 1 out-of-state visitors will not have to comply with the quarantine if they have tested negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours of arriving in Maine. Visitors from nearby Vermont and New Hampshire, which both have low case counts like Maine, will be exempt entirely as of Friday. (PRESS HERALD)
5. The Maine Bicentennial Commission announced Monday it is postponing its commemoration to 2021 due to the coronavirus outbreak. All events that were scheduled for 2020, including the statehood day ceremony, bicentennial parade, and sealing of the time capsule, will happen in 2021. (WMTW)
