1. The Maine House and Senate passed a legislative rewrite of the Marijuana Legalization Act on Monday night, but both votes failed to get the two-thirds majority needed to override a likely veto by Gov. Paul LePage. The regulatory bill now goes to LePage’s desk, a longtime marijuana opponent. The Republican has 10 days – until Nov. 3 – to sign it, veto it or allow it to become law without his signature. (PH)
2. More than 100 parents and students staged a rally Monday morning outside York High School, claiming that school administrators have not done enough to protect a gay student from being bullied. The protest prompted a response from York High Principal Karl Francis, who said York police are investigating the alleged bullying. “We have dedicated the day to listen to students and look forward to working alongside them to ensure that all students feel welcome, safe and supported at York High School,” he said. “This morning’s rally signified a statement for unity and respect for all York students.” (PH)
3. There’s a downside to the warm October weather we’ve been getting. Ticks are thriving in the warmer than normal temperatures. Warm, humid conditions are more conducive for ticks to venture up from the ground. Researchers at Maine Medical Center say if you encounter a tick during this time of year, nine times out of ten it will be a deer tick, the type that most often transmits Lyme disease. (WCSH)
4. Lack of Sleep Causes People to Get Scared More Easily. Do you find yourself getting frightened quite frequently? According to a new study published in The Journal of Neuroscience, people who get less REM sleep are likelier to become fearful in the face of a frightening event. 5. Amazon announced on Monday it has received 238 proposals from cities and regions across North America vying to host the company’s second headquarters. The Los Angeles Times reports that 54 states, provinces, districts and territories in the United States, Canada and Mexico were represented in the bids. They include at least two confirmed proposals from Maine. One from the Brunswick Landing office park in Brunswick, and another from the town of Scarborough that would place Amazon’s HQ2 on the site of harness racing venue Scarborough Downs. The company will invest more than $5 billion and create up to 50,000 jobs for “Amazon HQ2. (LT)
