1. Waffle House has offered to pay for the funerals of the four people killed in its Nashville restaurant on Sunday. A rep for the company told TMZ on Tuesday that they have reached out to the families of the victims and offered to pay for all funeral and medical costs associated with the attack. Four people were killed and another four injured when 29-year-old Travis Reinking entered the restaurant with an AR-15 and opened fire; customer James Shaw Jr. eventually wrestled his assault rifle away. Portland city councilors heard strong testimony yesterday both in support of and in opposition to a proposal that would require businesses in the city to give all of their full-time, part-time and seasonal employees as many as six paid sick days a year. Workers – sometimes holding multiple jobs – told stories of having to go to work sick and spreading illnesses to clients and customers. Some business owners, who support the idea in concept, said profit margins are thin and each business needs to figure out what works for them. Portland’s proposal would require employers to give their full-time, part-time and seasonal employees one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. May 8th the city will revisit this issue. Maple season is underway but this year’s supply is falling short thanks to the bizarre weather Maine has experienced this spring. “We’ve made 110 gallons of syrup so far this year,” Holly Hardwick, who runs Northwoods Nectar in Eagle Lake, said. “We want to be at 700 gallons for the season.” That season, she said, could end as early as this week if temperatures continue to rise. 4. If you’ve ever had a package stolen off your front porch, you’ll probably love Amazon’s new innovation to thwart would-be thieves. On Tuesday, the company announced that it will start delivering packages to the trunks’ of customers cars. The new program is initially being rolled out in 37 U.S. cities and requires downloading an Amazon app and linking it to your vehicle’s connected car service, like General Motors’ OnStar system. The in-car delivery service will be free for Prime members. (Reuters)
