1. Jason Mackenrodt walked into Bangor Savings Bank on upper Main Street, Waterville, Tuesday morning, robbed the bank and fled. He ran across four lanes of traffic on Main Street and into the Ming Lee restaurant parking lot, slipped on the ice and found himself face-to-face with a Maine State Police lieutenant who just happened to be parked in the right place at the right time. “When he fell, the money and the gun he had stashed in his jacket pocket spilled onto the parking lot, and the money was swept across the parking lot by the wind,” police Chief Joseph Massey said later. “Members of the public tried to scoop it up.” Glenn Lang, was suspicious, of course, and got out of his vehicle, tackled the man, and took him into custody just about the time city police responded to the report of a bank robbery. 2. Members of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention are outraged over the spread of anti-vaccination flyers in southern Maine. The CDC says the flyers are turning up at big box stores in southern Maine. “It was misleading and inaccurate,” State Epidemiologist Dr. Siiri Bennett told WGME. “It was designed to feed on people’s fears.” The Maine Immunization Coalition says right now five percent of Maine children are not vaccinated, because of their parents’ philosophical objections; the seventh highest rate in the country. “Vaccines keep you and your family safe,” Bennett said. “It prevents illness. It prevents the spread of illness.” (WGME)

3. Taxpayers are bracing for smaller tax refunds this fiscal year. The IRS has reported tax refunds this year will be 8 percent lower than last year, on average. This is the first tax season since Congress overhauled the tax code in 2017. (WMTW)

4. Mexican drug kingpin El Chapo could face life in prison after being convicted of 10 crimes on Tuesday in New York. “I’ve never faced a case with so may cooperating witnesses and so much evidence,” said El Chapo’s attorney, who plans to appeal the verdict. El Chapo is set to be sentenced on June 25. (NYTimes)

5. Radio Day. This day celebrates the radio and radio waves. Radio has been around for over 130 years. It’s still mind-boggling that someone figured out how to create and translate invisible “radio” waves and, in spite of streaming and other rival technologies, 93 percent of adults say that they still listen to the radio at least once a week.
