1. Governor-elect Janet Mills spent New Year’s Day moving into her new home in Augusta: the Blaine House. Mills posted on her Facebook page: I am spending today beginning my move into the Blaine House and reflecting on how grateful I am for the immense trust and faith you have placed in me to lead our great state. I look forward to tomorrow’s inaugural ceremonies and celebrating with so many of you. Ceremonies for the Governor-elect’s inauguration begin at 6 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center. (NewsCenterMaine)

2. Hundreds of people flocked to Old Orchard Beach Tuesday afternoon to take part in the 31st annual Lobster Dip. The event raises money for the Special Olympics of Maine. The dip was postponed last year due to bitter cold temperatures, but this years weather was much warmer. Organizers say this was one of their most successful years to date. They had 270 dippers and raised more than $100,000. (NewsCenterMaine)

3. Karly Drue Williams was the first baby reported to be born in Maine in 2019, arriving at 12:09 a.m. Tuesday at Northern Light AR Gould Hospital in Presque Isle, in the upper reaches of Aroostook County. (Press Herald)

4. A new online resource guide for Maine’s LGBTQ community is now live online. The website Out In Maine connects Mainers to resources, gay-friendly businesses, as well social events. The free website is connected with resources in all 16 Maine counties including stores, businesses, places of worship, and schools in addition to LGBTQ support organizations. (NewsCenterMaine)

5. NASA spacecraft New Horizons opened 2019 by flying by Ultima Thule, a tiny, distant world 4 billion miles (6.4 billion kilometers) from Earth. On Tuesday, it was confirmed that it was the most distant object ever visited by a spacecraft. (Twitter)
