1. At least nine people are dead and 1.5 million are still without power after a storm ravaged communities on the New England coast over the weekend. The governors of both Massachusetts and New York declared a state of emergency on Saturday afternoon, following similar announcements by the governors of Virginia and Maryland on Friday. Additionally, the storm caused hundreds of flights into and out of New York and Boston to be canceled. (Reuters)
2. Portland’s superintendent sent a letter to parents Saturday saying students who participate in the National School Walkout later this month will not be punished. The National School Walkout will take place on March 14, the one-month anniversary of the South Florida high school shooting that left 17 people dead. Walkouts are planned at dozens of Maine schools. 3. Midweek nor’easter. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for all of southern and western Maine and all of New Hampshire. The watch goes into effect Wednesday afternoon and ends Thursday evening. Heavy snow is possible and travel will be difficult, especially during Thursday morning’s commute. It is too early to nail down specific snowfall totals, but accumulation of 6 inches to a foot are possible. (WMTW)
