1. A gunman opened fire inside a classroom at Umpqua Community College in Roseberg, Oregon, yesterday, killing nine people and wounding seven before being shot to death by police. One witness claims he asked his victims to stand up and state their religion before executing them. According to the AP, the killer has been identified as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer. Thoughts and prayers going out to Oregon and the friends and families of the victims.
2. Portland’s Downtown District is getting a makeover. With a subtle name change, now called Portland Downtown, and a new logo and website, it’s all part of a 5 year plan to market the city’s downtown district and promote economic success for its businesses.
3. The 144th (wow!) Cumberland County Fair takes place this weekend! “We were pleased to be able to provide another quality week of Agricultural exhibits, entertainment for the ages, food and merchandise vendors, demonstrations in the Exhibition Hall, Museum and Sugar House, Livestock displays and shows, Horticulture exhibits, Daily Harness Racing, and so much more!”
4. Thanks to the generosity of donors, Mainer Joel Carpenter will be able to fly back to Portland with his new dog, Sadie! Joel recently made what felt like would have been a one-way trip to Michigan to adopt Sadie after finding her on the popular website petfinder.com. Truly, man’s best friend!

Pretty soon you’ll be able to rate human beings like you rate restaurants… think of it like Yelp for people… It’s called Peeple, and honestly it sounds kind of awful! “When the app does launch, probably in late November, you will be able to assign reviews and one- to five-star ratings to everyone you know: your exes, your co-workers, the old guy who lives next door. You can’t opt out — once someone puts your name in the Peeple system, it’s there unless you violate the site’s terms of service. And you can’t delete bad or biased reviews — that would defeat the whole purpose.” Karma coming in full-force.
