1. Should we still be celebrating Columbus Day?  We have for 81 years but more and more cities are celebrating “Indigenous People’s Day” instead, a day that acknowledges and celebrates the millions of people who were already living here when Christopher Columbus arrived. This year, the recast holiday known as Indigenous Peoples Day will take place in at least nine cities across the United States, including in Albuquerque, N.M., Anadarko, Okla., Portland, Ore., St. Paul, Minn., and Olympia, Wash., Should Portland, Maine do the same?

2. More and more schools are opting for eDays instead of snow days. It’s no secret that Maine can have some harsh winters. Would it be wiser for schools to present work to do at home via the Internet rather than make up that school day at the end of the year?

3. Do you vape? A new law in Maine takes effect on October 15 that bans vaping in public places, basically anywhere where smoking is already illegal.

4. Sanford Policeare searching for a man they say robbed a convenience store on High Street, and was hit by a car while fleeing the scene. He continued running and got into a white Ford car with a man and woman and fled the scene. Sanford Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them. [wcsh6]

5. Anasteroid about 1.5 miles in width flew near earth on Saturday. It posed no threat fortunately as it was about 15 million miles away from Earth (phew). For a little perspective, Venus is roughly 25 million miles away from Earth. While the moon is about 238,000 miles away from Earth.
