1. The United States coronavirus cases top 609,000: America’s death toll stands at more than 26,000. The United States recorded its highest number of coronavirus deaths in a day on Tuesday after several days in which the death toll had fallen or was nearly flat. According to Dr. Fauci The US is “not there yet” in regard to reopening the country. (CNN)
2. Another person in Maine has died from the coronavirus, bringing the total to 20. There have been 734 coronavirus cases reported in 15 Maine counties as of Tuesday. 124 people have been hospitalized at some point during their illness and 292 people have recovered. (WGME)
3. Gov. Janet Mills extended a state of civil emergency for Maine until May 15, which provides her with the authority to establish or lift restrictions on public life. She also says that Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont are working together to coordinate when to reopen their economies. Mills says the three governors are looking into how and when they would lift restrictions based on the medical evidence surrounding COVID-19. (WGME)
4. Reportedly unleashed dogs have been creating problems with social distancing. The Portland City Council passed an amendment Tuesday night that requires dog owners to keep their pets on a leash anytime between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The only exceptions are the dog parks on Ocean Avenue and Valley Street. Barack Obama endorsed Joe Biden for president on Tuesday. “Joe has the character and the experience to guide us through one of our darkest times, and heal us through a long recovery,” Obama said of his former vice president. He spent much of the video heaping praise on Bernie Sanders, who recently exited the race and endorsed Biden. (AP)
