1. After dozens of people spoke about a desperate need to improve four elementary schools, Portland’s school board voted 6-2 Tuesday night to ask the City Council to propose a $70 million bond to voters in November to pay for renovations. (CNN)
2. Maine is dealing w/ elevated fire danger. Fire departments have been busy fighting blazes w/ the area being dryer than normal. Fire officials are asking people to be vigilant as July 4 approaches. “We want people to be very careful with fireworks.” Bridgton Fire Chief Glen Garland said. He said people should also be careful with campfires and make sure they are cold to the touch before leaving them unattended. (WMTW)
3. Minnesota reigns as the best state to raise children for the second year in a row according to a study released Tuesday. Four categories were taken into consideration: Economic and health conditions, education and quality of communities. Massachusetts ranked #2 while Maine was #17. The worst state to raise a child is Mississippi. (CNN)
4. Yoan Moncada made his Double-A debut for Portland yesterday and went 1-for-5 with an RBI single and a run scored. Moncada also made two diving stops defensively and a lunging grab on a liner that he turned into a double play. Moncada is the No. 1 Red Sox prospect and the third-best prospect in all the minors, according to Baseball America. Boston spent $63 million for Moncada. (BD)
5. Unicode rolled out 72 new emojis on Tuesday, including several new faces, hand gestures, food items, and animals. Additions include a hand taking a selfie, a pregnant woman and a creepy clown. You’ve also now got access to a salad, an avocado, bacon, and clinking champagne glasses. (BF)
